The Future of Communications

By

I call my consulting space a communications practice for several reasons. The principal drive for this selection of language is that a practice is a living and changing entity versus static truth. This road to creating a niche space was not easy. The path was made by making room for the ways I existed beyond the consumer driven automation of the human experience and rooting deeper into authentic messaging. At times my messaging has been shared as service, art, independent performance, or journal entry which folks may not see but will certainly experience the effects of. This journey also meant becoming unqualified for leadership roles that required maintaining levels of production that exploited my own skills/time and the work of others.

I do not want to confuse authenticity for hyper-independence. As we learn to write, walk or talk as children we mirror each other and that is the beauty of having a broader species to relate to. These third spaces where we learn without the extraction of our skills but rather by leaning into each other have become sparse in the 20’s. The idea that we can learn with each other and of self-determination is still a marginalized concept that is central to many tribes and cultures. It can be seen here on the island of Puerto Rico as linguists and content creators explore the origins of certain words that have very different meanings in municipalities and compared with the great Spanish-speaking communities. Regardless of what appears to be modern, limiting our language and standardization of thought is a colonial concept to increase the means of production for a chosen few. This makes for a boring existence.

As visionaries, it can be overwhelming to see patterns in society that folks are not aware of or choose to ignore however the emotional response is not the only aspect of our purpose – emotions are data that do not need to be stored on a cloud but rather composted into the Earth. They are moving pieces of our perception, which is what keeps our brains in rhythm with our bodies and sometimes off beat. To say that communications is limited to an app or data feels like a side quest gone wrong for it we go back in time, you will see that even caveman had a need to leave a mark and depict their daily lives. Perhaps we are not more or less evolved then our Neanderthal relatives or perhaps we have over complicated language that exists in so many forms.

How can we in the echo chamber of social media reorient our communication experiences into tools and exercises that ground us versus lift us into a cloud that reroutes rivers to keep the super computers they are stored in cooled down? How do we cool ourselves down during climate change when logging onto social media fries the motherboards of nervous systems and automates action that may not be rooted in the daily reality of our lives? How do we learn to listen to the languages of our bodies and hearts which goes beyond words? I can refer you to many who can help, including myself however, in order to recognize us you must first see within yourself the possibility that this life is multidimensional and give yourself permission to live your truth, even if there isn’t the language to describe it. Have faith in the whispers from intuition, the trees, and the animals.

Take a day to ask yourself, “Have I even sat down with myself to write my own story?”
